Since 2010 Chas Everitt Oudtshoorn has been involved in the Schoemanshoek Community Enhancement Project (SCEP). Once a week we provide a cooked meal for 60 children. We are also busy collecting warm blankets, clothes and mattresses for this community.
Mr. Hennie Pretorius, from Schoemanshoek, is the chairman of SCEP. He is involved with these poor people on a daily basis. “I live where they live. They are my neighbours.” says Mr. Pretorius. He has been involved with this project since 2000. During the parliament speech in 2007 the president made the following statement: “All South Africans need to work together in striving for freedom of poverty and decay.” In response to this a Business School of the University of Stellenbosch and a national newspaper held a conference with the theme „Social Cohesion‟. Mr. Pretorius did a presentation on behalf of SCEP and the conference organizers identified “SCEP as a community development project that can make a positive and practical contribution to Social Cohesion in South Africa.”
SCEP VISION -- PASSION
- To introduce a specific range of activities that will promote and support optimal community development, that enhances the quality of life for disadvantage children and adults.
- To lift the standard of life higher in families with regard to social, moral and ethical issues. (Quote www.scep.co.za)
One of SCEP‟s projects is to provide an education for pre-primary children aged from 2-6 year old. To prevent these children from being poor for the rest of their live they have to get an education. No one can learn on an empty tummy. Every Thursday we provide these children with a home cooked meal to help them escape the vicious cycle of poverty.
